چکیده

3GPP proposed the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) to provide high-speed wireless transmission services to mobile users. To efficiently route the packets, the PDP contexts are maintained in the UE, SGSN, and GGSN in the UMTS network. Before beginning a session, the PDP Context Activation procedure is exercised to create the PDP contexts, where the SGSN selects one GGSN to serve the UE based on an IP list (for all GGSNs that can serve the UE). If the selected GGSN does not accept the request due to exception events, the SGSN chooses another GGSN until the list is exhausted, which may cause unbalance-loaded GGSNs, redundant traffic load to the network, introduce delay for the PDP context activation procedure, and thus decrease QoS for the UMTS network. To resolve the above issues, this paper proposes an intelligent GGSN dispatch mechanism ‘IGD’ with different sorting algorithms. The proposed mechanism is considered practical and easily installed in the existing UMTS network. We also conduct simulation experiments to investigate the performance of the IGD mechanism. q 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance Comparison of UMTS/WLAN Integrated Architectures with Dynamic Home Agent Assignments

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are providing the most economical means of internet access. However, their access is very much limited. They can be deployed in a large scale by integrating them with cellular networks such as universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS); general packet radio services (GPRS) etc. A seamless roaming between these two heterogeneous networks can be ensured ...

An All-MPLS Approach for UMTS 3G Core Networks

In this paper, we present an all-MPLS approach for UMTS 3G core networks. GTP-tunnel has been defined by 3GPP as the transport mechanism for UMTS. For each packet transmission, extra GTP, UDP, and IP headers (40-byte) are required. For short packets, such as VoIP payloads, transmission overhead is very high. Enhanced-GTP was proposed to eliminate the need for a GTP header. Since its operation m...

Improving packet delivery in GPRS/UMTS networks

Mobile telecommunication systems such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) provide packetswitched service for mobile terminals. 3GPP Release 4 and Release 5 further offer packet voice over a GPRS/UMTS infrastructure so that IP based communications between mobile to mobile is expected to be one of the major traffic types in the future 3G Al...

An Efficient Method of Mobile Ip Based Handoff Mechanism for Wlan-gprs Integrated Network

This paper proposes a new technique for Mobile IP (MIP) registration by WLAN host (WH) of the Internet through GPRS network. The home agent (HA) of WH resides in the Internet. The gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) provides foreign agent (FA) functionality for WH in GPRS. After successful attachment with GPRS network in roaming scenario, WH needs two mandatory passes for MIP registration with HA....
